Houston Texans Tickets – 2010 is a Pivotal Year for the Texans
The Houston Texans have been on the verge of breaking through for a few seasons now and fans have been murmuring about when it will finally happen. Many thought it would happen in 2009, but the Texans slumped in the middle of the season and narrowly missed out on the playoffs. Still, the Texans posted their first winning season in franchise history a season ago and appear to be headed in the right direction. In 2010 with the AFC as up for grabs as ever before, the Texans are in a prime position to take the next step that everyone has been waiting for.
Winning in the NFL takes a while, particularly for expansion teams. Since joining in the NFL in 2002, the Texans have done their fair share of losing, as was to be expected. They suffered through years of anemic offensive lines and first overall draft pick David Carr, who may not have the fondest memories of his time in Houston. Considering the pummeling he took as the Texans’ main signal caller, he may not have any solidified memories anyway.
But the Texans now finally have a few pieces to build around and have been on the cusp of the playoffs for the past three seasons. After going 8-8 in 2007 and 2008, the Texans went 9-7 in 2009, which was just one win shy of the postseason. There will be skeptics who will not believe in the Texans until they finally make the playoffs, but it seems that they finally have the talent at key positions to make it all happen. Even their decision to select defensive end Mario Williams and pass on Reggie Bush seems in retrospect to be the right move for the franchise.
For the Texans, it all starts with quarterback Matt Schaub, who is finally emerging to be the signal caller that the coaching staff thought he could be. Schaub started all 16 games for the Texans in 2009 and had one of the best statistical years in the league. With 29 touchdowns and 15 picks, Schaub was one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the NFL and boasted a very strong QB rating of 98.6 – numbers very close to what Peyton Manning put up. Considering how few good quarterbacks there are in the league, the Texans already have a step up on much of the competition.
It also doesn’t hurt that Schaub is throwing primarily to Andre Johnson, who is arguably the best wide receiver in the league. Johnson has had 100 catches and 1,500 yards in each of the last two seasons, making him the only wideout in the league who can say that. In tight end Owen Daniels, Schaub also has one of the top pass-catching tight ends in the league, though Daniels will have to recover from a major knee injury that sidelined him for the second half of the 2009 season.
Even though running back Steve Slaton struggled in 2009 due to injury, he still has the talent to get back to being a strong option in the backfield. Even without him for a good chunk of the season, the Texans had one of the most explosive offenses in the league in 2009. As an insurance policy, the Texans snagged running back Ben Tate in the second round of the draft.
Led by Mario Williams and Brian Cushing, their defense is also a very strong overall unit that kept them in games throughout last season. The Texans also added first round draft pick Kareem Jackson to their secondary, a move that should pay immediate dividends. Defensive tackle Earl Mitchell, who the Texans grabbed in the third round, should also see the field plenty and gives them more depth on their defensive front. Though he won’t directly help sell too many <a href=”<a href=”http://www.stubhub.com/houston-texans-tickets/”>Houston”>http://www.stubhub.com/houston-texans-tickets/”>Houston Texans tickets</a>, Mitchell will help with stuffing the run and winning battles in the trenches.
With a very good core group of defensive players and a top-tier offense, the Texans are in a great position to make the playoffs for the first time in their history. With Ben Roethlisberger suspended for the first four games of the 2010 season for Pittsburgh and perennial powers like New England appearing to be on the decline, there should be playoff spots up for grabs. Even if they don’t compete with Indianapolis for the division title, 2010 is looking like a big year for the Houston Texans.
