Boy Golf
I am trying to find an old golf commercial where a young boy hits a hole in 1 and no one is around to see it.?

there is an old golf commercial where this boy is out on the course alone and then he hits a hole and one but no one is around to see it-then all of the sudden a man on a golf cart comes out and says “good shot son” or something like that! please help!

Actually it’s a USGA commercial. The boy makes a hole in one and thinks no one sees it and at the last second a course attendant comes driving by and says he owes him a drink. Used to come on during the U.S. Opens all the time. Luckily I’m a pro so it’s my job to know such things…

Carefree [VHS]

Carefree [VHS]

£4.49

Perhaps because it was Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’s penultimate picture together for RKO, or perhaps because it is more romantic comedy than musical, Carefree tends to be a neglected entry in the series. This is unfortunate, because it retains many of the elements that made the duo so popular while also breaking new ground. Fred plays Tony Flagg, a psychoanalyst who is asked by his friend Stev…

Mario Golf (GBC)

Given that most people will buy anything with Mario’s chubby face plastered on it, the developers of Mario Golf could have taken the easy route with this licence. Instead, they practically ignored it, focusing on gameplay instead. Players can jump straight into the golfing action on one of the game’s four courses, but it’s a good idea to check out the excellent role-playing mode. In this mode, you…

Billy Boy

Billy Boy

$13.99

Not since Larry McMurtry’s The Last Picture Show has a novelist captured the poignant contradictions of young manhood in the American West the way Bud Shrake does in Billy Boy. And no novel has ever combined history, spirituality and golf into so potent a triumph of the human spirit. There are tough times ahead for sixteen-year-old Billy. He’s just come to Fort Worth with his father, Troy, after the death of his mother back in Albuquerque. Troy’s drinking and gambling will leave them all but penniless, and he’ll soon move on and abandon Billy in this strange town to fend for himself. With only a vague idea of how he’s going to live, Billy heads over to Colonial Country Club, where he hopes he can get work as a caddie and where he just might see his hero, Ben Hogan. What he finds there, under the watchful eye of his guardian spirit, teaches him unforgettable lessons about golf, life, love and honor. In Billy Boy, longtime novelist and screenwriter Bud Shrake takes us back to the early 1950s, in a story thick with the Texas dust. Hardscrabble Billy, tough as he thinks he is and smarter than he knows, makes a place for himself behind the walls of privilege at Colonial. He first draws the approval, then the ire, of the club’s most eccentric millionaire member, while his looks and manner draw the attention of the millionaire’s beautiful granddaughter — to the displeasure of her boyfriend, the club champion. Billy survives a fierce initiation and a dreadful scene with his drunken father — but most important, he comes in contact with two of the greatest figures in the history of golf in Texas, Ben Hogan and John Bredemus, each of whom takes Billy under his wing for different reasons and with different results. Shrake skillfully weaves these historical figures and his richly drawn characters into the fabric of the town and the tenor of the time. Billy must face down his fears and doubts, and he does so in a climactic confrontation that combines the yearnings of youth with the redemption of the spirit. Billy Boy is an unforgettable novel of coming of age in a time and a place filled with mythic echoes and frontier dreams.

Earnest, small-town Lawrence Campbell is fascinated by his poetry professor, the charismatic and uncompromising Jim Arsenault. Larry is determined to escape a life of thrifty drudgery and intellectual poverty working for his parents’ motel and mini-golf business on Prince Edward Island. Jim appears to the young poet as a beacon of authenticity – mercurial, endlessly creative, fearless in his confrontations with the forces of conformity. And he drinks a lot. Jim’s magnetic personality soon draws Larry’s entire poetry composition class into his orbit. Among the other literary acolytes are Sherrie Mitten, with her ringletted blonde hair and guileless blue eyes, the turtlenecked, urbane Claude who writes villanelles, and the champion of rhyming couplets about the heroic struggles of the Maritime proletariat, Todd. Casting a huge shadow over the group is the varsity football player and recreational drug user Chuck Slaughter – titanically strong, capriciously violent, hilariously indifferent to the charms of the poetic life – who has nearly given up terrifying Larry in order to pursue an awkward romantic interest in Sherrie. Drawn by ambition and fascination, the group assembles itself fawningly around Jim, tagging along to bars, showing up at readings, thrilled to be invited to Jim’s home, a shambling farmhouse in the woods where he lives with Moira, his shrewish backwoods muse. Lost in adulation, Larry is so delighted to be singled out for Jim’s attention that he does not pause to wonder what Jim expects from his increasingly close relationship with the young poet. Closely observed and deeply funny, Mean Boy tells the story of Larry’s year-long battle against the indiscriminate use of quotation marks in advertising and his disillusionment as his narcissistic, hard-drinking idol spins out of control and threatens to take the young man’s cherished notions about art and poetry down with him. Mean Boy is Lynn Coady’s most polished and ambitious work to date. From the Hardcover edition.
