Classic Ben

The Top Ben Stiller Films on Satellite TV   by Jon Jacobson.

Out of all of the actors currently starring in the big Hollywood blockbusters, none are as malleable or as talented as Ben Stiller.

Now, it is obvious that you may have some disagreements, possible desiring to say something along the lines of: “Ben Stiller? Are you serious? The guy plays the same roll in every movie he is in.” Granted, Stiller has the nervous yet sweet guy down pat, but with regards to his resume, he has been in some absolutely phenomenal and hilarious films. In some ways, he is kind of like the Michael Caine of comedy, who never seems to turn a roll down, always perfecting his craft.

So, to glorify one of the best comedians of the day, here is a list of three essential movies to see for any person interested in viewing some of Stiller’s work, which can all currently be seen on the HD film channels on cable and satellite TV.

Tropic Thunder – Every great actor has been in a war film, from Tom Hanks to Sean Penn. With “Tropic Thunder,” Stiller not only made a kick ass mockery of the average war film, he parodied the whole Hollywood mentality of actors, directors and producers. Starring as Tugg Speedman, a washed up action star whose latest attempt at Oscar glory backfired (playing a mentally retarded farm boy), the film follows the exploits of a group of high profile actors filming an epic war saga in Vietnam, or at least that is what they think. With explosions, gun battles and Robert Downey Jr. as an Australian actor portraying an African American (he received an Academy Award nomination for the hysterical role), “Tropic Thunder” is one of the best comedies of the last 10 years, one that must be seen in high definition to really appreciate the grand finale.

Zoolander – While “Tropic Thunder” made fun of Hollywood, “Zoolander” made fun of modeling. Starring Ben Stiller as professional male model Derek Zoolander, the film follows Stiller as he tries to maintain his career while in the shadow of up-and-comer Hansel, played by Owen Wilson. Add to the equation a brainwashing plot to have Zoolander assassinate the prime minister of Malaysia in order to stop the implementation of child labor laws and you have comedic gold. Not to mention that Will Ferrell’s portrayal of Mugatu, the evil fashion designer, is probably one of the funniest parts of the movie.

The Cable Guy – Unlike the first two films, were Stiller acted as well as wrote the script and directed, “The Cable Guy” only has him on the credits for directing. Granted, he had a minor roll playing Stan Sweet as he stood trial for the murder of his twin brother, but his on screen time rounded out to be only about 5 to 7 minutes. Although this Jim Carrey vehicle did not do too well at the box office or with critics, it has become a cult classic due to not only its funny story but also its great one-liners. And if that was not enough, the movie has probably one of the best sports scenes ever filmed, with Carrey leaping off of the back of Jack Black to slam dunk, shattering the entire backboard in the process.

Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs (1937) [VHS] [1938]

Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs (1937) [VHS] [1938]

£3.90

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was nicknamed “Disney’s Folly” by contemporary observers; they doubted that the short cartoons shown before the main film could ever successfully make the transition from filler to feature presentation. Surely, no one would sit still for over an hour to watch an animated film, their eyes smarting from the bright colours on screen? Fortunately, Walt Disney and his ar…

Dumbo (1941) (Disney) [VHS] [1942]

£4.93

A Disney “classic” that actually is a classic, Dumbo should be part of your video collection whether or not you have children. The storytelling was never as lean as in Dumbo, the songs rarely as haunting (or just plain weird), the characters rarely so well defined. The film pits the “cold, cruel, heartless” world that can’t accept abnormality against a plucky, and mute, hero. Jumbo Jr. (Dumbo is a…

Animation genius Chuck Jones directed this 196…

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (2 Disc Platinum Edition) [DVD]

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (2 Disc Platinum Edition) [DVD]

£19.85

If you dig back into the dim and distant past, Disney as a company was slow to appreciate the potential of the DVD format. And while it very much got its act together in the end, the very early Disney DVDs were distinctly underwhelming. The company has made no such mistake with Blu-ray, embracing the format astoundingly well, as perfectly demonstrated by its release of Snow White and the Seven Dwa…

101 Dalmatians Platinum Edition [DVD] [1961]

101 Dalmatians Platinum Edition [DVD] [1961]

£17.14

Back in 1961, Walt Disney got a little hip with 101 Dalmatians, making use of that flat Saturday morning cartoon style that had become so popular. The result is a kitschy change in animation and story. Pongo and Perdita are two lonely Dalmatians who meet in a London park and arrange for their pet humans to marry so they can live together and raise a family. They become proud parents of 15 pups, wh…

Pinocchio (2 Disc Platinum Edition) [DVD]

Pinocchio (2 Disc Platinum Edition) [DVD]

£17.70

This legendary animated feature is surely beyond criticism by now and, furthermore, it’s unlikely that we’ll see such forceful narrative in a kids’ cartoon ever again. Disney’s treatment of Collodi’s story of the little wooden puppet who wants nothing more than to be a real boy is always guaranteed to have audiences entranced. While some of the movie’s success is derived from its liberal use of th…

 A.J. Ayer: A Life

A.J. Ayer: A Life

$18.5

A. J. Ayer (1910 — 1989) was a man of startling complexity: an exceptionally rigorous and penetrating philosopher, he was also a dedicated hedonist and seducer. He traveled in the most glamorous social circles, yet his friends found him oddly remote. Internationally acclaimed author Ben Rogers brings the brilliant, strangely vulnerable author of the classic Language, Truth, and Logic to vivid life, along with the Oxford intellectual world where he met Isaiah Berlin, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and many other great thinkers and writers of the era. Colorful, intimate, and often poignant, this is a powerful biography of a provocative and unforgettable man whose ideas changed the landscape of Western thought.

 As a Driven Leaf

As a Driven Leaf

$18.95

The age of the Talmud is brought to life in a breathtaking saga. This masterpiece of modern fiction tells the gripping tale of renegade talmudic sage Elisha ben Abuyah’s struggle to reconcile his faith with the allure of Hellenistic culture. Set in Roman Palestine, As a Driven Leaf draws readers into the dramatic era of Rabbinic Judaism. Watch the great Talmudic sages at work in the Sanhedrin, eavesdrop on their arguments about theology and Torah, and agonize with them as they contemplate rebellion against an oppressive Roman rule. But Steinberg’s classic novel also transcends its historical setting with its depiction of a timeless, perennial feature of the Jewish experience: the inevitable conflict between the call of tradition and the glamour of the surrounding culture. In his illuminating foreword, specially commissioned for this edition, Chaim Potok stresses the contemporary relevance of As a Driven Leaf: This novel of ideas and passions. . . retains its ability to enter the heart of pious and seeking Jew alike. Synagogues everywhere are adopting As a Driven Leaf for group study.

Bonanza 50th Anniversary! Countless Americans grew up on this classic Western television series, which debuted in 1959 and ran until 1973. The series, which featured Lorne Greene, Michael Landon, Dan Blocker and Pernell Roberts, chronicled the adventures of Ben Cartwright and his three sons on their sprawling Ponderosa Ranch in Nevada Territory during the 1860s. As the imposing powerhouse Hoss Cartwright, actor Dan Blocker was matched with a 15.3 hand Quarter Horse / Thoroughbred-cross gelding, named Chub, who weighed a sturdy 1.250 pounds.
